GRAND OPENING: Ledbury Park School Playground

Ledbury Park Ribbon Cutting

TORONTO - September has been an exciting month for Toronto’s Ledbury Park Elementary and Middle School, as they kicked off another school year and celebrated a major milestone with the grand opening of the school’s new playground.

A crowd of students, families and community supporters cheered on during September 17th ribbon cutting ceremony, as special guests City of Toronto Councillor Christin Carmichael Greb, TDSB Superintendent Peter Chang and Trustee Jennifer Arp, Vice Principal Mrs. Sarkissian and the Playscape Redevelopment Committee – Marcel Weider, Sherri Glassberg, Kyle Greenspan and Jeremy Jacobs, proudly declared the playground officially open.

It took 2.5 years to bring the Ledbury School Playscape Project to life. Even with a sizeable grant from the TDSB, there was still a shortfall. Thanks to the success of the Playscape Redevelopment Committee’s brick-by-brick campaign, the remaining funds were raised in less than one school year.

It took our School Advisory Council’s commitment of $20,000 to kick start our campaign. The SAC’s commitment was followed up with our brick-by-brick fundraising campaign which raised the additional $67,000 that was needed to build this project,” said Jacobs, explaining that “we sold three different sized bricks with custom engraving to 188 families and businesses. These bricks are now a permanent fixture.” (Play! by Crozier's sponsored brick is seen below).

With funding in place, the school bid farewell to their wooden playground which had deteriorated and long outlived its lifespan. In its place is a fully accessible, bright and exciting GameTime playground, complete with Rock Wall, Twister Climber, Tilted Sky Runner, Dueling Wave Zip Slide and much more. Play! by Crozier was the proud supplier and Ken Hoyle of Hoyle & Associates was the Landscape Architect on the project.

The kids love it! It gives them a totally different play experience. You’ll see 60 to 70 kids out there at the same time, and it’s always packed even before school starts and long after it ends,” said Jacobs, adding, “We would not be standing here without the commitment of our school families and the generosity of local business owners and the community at large.”

Let’s hear from the real critics- the kids!

“It’s so fun, I love it all!” – Sophie

“It’s so much better, I like the monkey bars!” – Emma

“The Spin-ny thing (Tilted Sky Runner) is awesome!” – Carly & Paulina

The grand reopening was followed by the school’s annual welcome back barbeque, complete with bouncy castles, live entertainment, food trucks and more.

Wishing you years of endless fun on your new playground!
